Capturing Contributions to Change: Intersection of Photography and Sustainability

South Tangerang - How many times have we taken many photos of nature while travelling? How often have we relied on Google Maps and Reviews to aid our travel plans? For many, pictures and online reviews are just an everyday tool to navigate our surroundings, but for MBI student Fanny Abdul Aziz, they are a way to offer insights into sustainability efforts and the less-travelled environments essential to the preservation of nature.
Presenting at MuSE (Meet up, Share and Engage), the student-centred event series at Monash University, Indonesia, Fanny shares his experiences as a Google Local Guide and Street View Trusted Photographer. He delivers an engaging presentation on “Amplifying Sustainability Impact through Photography”, divided into the following three sections:
Capturing Insight for Sustainability Action
Fanny Abdul Aziz sharing his experience in photography
"As you can see here," Fanny points to his photographs of his excursion to Wamena, Papua. "The landslide has eroded the path to the hospital." Fanny shares how his photographs helped him to raise awareness of sustainability issues, also highlighting his forest conservation experience in Riau.
During his trip to Sungai Lolo, West Sumatra, Fanny noted how the sites he visited were previously unmarked on Google Maps and could benefit from more sustainable tourism.
"I submitted my photo to Google Maps as well as the accommodation I stayed at." Fanny shows a screenshot of the result of his submission, where the site he visited was now marked on Google Maps.
Finding Our Own Way to Contribute
Fanny directs a question now to his audience, "What activity can Monash students do together to raise awareness about sustainability?"
From there, students discuss the actions they can take and how they can capture their own insights for the impact of sustainability. Aided by fresh snacks provided, they discuss visiting environmental sites on study tours, volunteering, and sharing their own experiences online to raise awareness.
What is MuSE (Meet up, Share and Engage)?
