Meanwhile, class simulation is a dedicated session tailored for prospective students who have submitted applications to the esteemed Master's program at Monash University, Indonesia. Operationalising Culture: Key Dimensions and Contexts of Intercultural Communication
In today’s interconnected world, the ability to navigate cultural differences is not just an advantage — it’s essential. This one-hour taster session offers an engaging introduction to the core ideas behind intercultural communication and negotiation. Drawing from influential frameworks by Hofstede, Trompenaars, and the GLOBE project, we will explore how national culture can be "operationalised" into measurable dimensions that influence management styles, communication preferences, and negotiation approaches. We will also critically assess the benefits and limitations of these models.
Participants will gain insight into:
Types of cultural studies (from ethnocentric to synergetic approaches)
Cultural dimensions such as power distance, individualism, masculinity, and time orientation
The role of perception and bias in intercultural communication
The impact of stereotypes and ethnocentrism on workplace interactions
By combining theory with practical reflection activities, the session aims to build greater cultural awareness and stimulate critical thinking about how we process information, form judgments, and relate across cultural boundaries.
