Tangerang –  To commemorate the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Month in October 2024, Monash University, Indonesia held an intimate EDI Workshop of 40 participants. Students, academics and professional staff came together for approximately 3 hours to engage in difficult conversations about challenges in the workplace or campus such as microaggressions, gender harassment and limited intersectional awareness.

Professor Matthew Nicholson, President of Monash University, Indonesia, gave insightful opening remarks to kick start the workshop. Professor Nicholson used the case of his PhD student’s study on the impacts of microaggressions and gender harassment on women’s opportunities and growth in sports, to emphasise the importance and learning objectives of the EDI Workshop.

For this year’s EDI Workshop, Monash University, Indonesia collaborated with the Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE). Facilitators were Wita Krisanti, IBCWE Executive Director and Monash Alum, and Zelda Lupsita, IBCWE Project Manager. Wita and Zelda structured the workshop by, first, dissecting each element of EDI in conceptual and practical terms, and then presenting the many policies and frameworks which both Monash University and the Indonesian government already have but people tend to overlook. Wita and Zeld also addressed participants’ critical questions with real-world cases and organisational solutions which IBCWE have practised.

“Raising topics related to microaggressions at Monash EDI 2024 holds significant meaning for me,” says Baiq Maryam, 2nd year student of the Master of Public Policy and Management program. She further reflects on the topics discussed in the workshop, “I frequently encounter [microaggressions] in almost every organisation I join. Clear solutions and methods to address the problem and provide a deterrent effect for the perpetrators are often lacking, especially in communities without a clear hierarchy of authority and where such behaviours are often dismissed as harmless jokes.”

Monash University, Indonesia is committed to foster a community that cultivates empathy and respect for individual differences.
