Meeting with Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Monash University, Indonesia Ready to Support Human Resource Development in Indonesia

Monash University, Indonesia visits The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto

Jakarta, 31 May 2024 - The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, received an official visit from the President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, Indonesia, Professor Matthew Nicholson, along with his team, at the Ministry's office. Accompanying Airlangga were the Echelon I officials, including the Minister's Special Staff Raden Pardede, Reza Siregar, Rizal Edwin Manansang, as well as the Director for Labour Productivity Improvement, Chairul Saleh.

During the visit, Matthew elaborated on the rapid development of Monash University, Indonesia, in the first three years since the campus was established in BSD, Banten. This expansion includes the addition of master’s degree programs, an increase in student numbers, and various strategic collaborations undertaken with both public and private sectors in Indonesia. Matthew emphasised the mission of Monash University's presence in Indonesia to make a tangible contribution to the country's development. Monash University, as one of the top 50 universities in the world, is committed to supporting the Indonesian Government in its efforts to enhance human resource capacity.

Airlangga expressed his hope that Monash University, Indonesia, could add more study programs, especially in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Currently, there is a need for competent Indonesian human resources in digital transformation and emerging industries such as Critical Minerals, electric vehicles, green economy, biosciences, and sustainable energy.

Additionally, Airlangga also informed the current status of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Edutech Medica International Banten, for which the Government is currently preparing a Presidential Decree to officially establish it. The idea of the SEZ Edutech Medica International Banten has been developed since mid-2022, with Monash University, Indonesia, as the education provider. The establishment of the SEZ is expected to have a significant impact on the economy, job creation, and attracting investment from the private sector.
