Helping students think creatively, critically, and practically about marketing

Triana blends academic insight with real industry experience to help students become confident, thoughtful, and adaptable marketing professionals.

What do you teach?

I teach across the marketing and digital communications area, including Digital Marketing, Integrated Marketing Communications, Applied Research Project, and Entrepreneurial Innovations.

What qualifications or professional experiences are most central to your work as an academic?

I hold a PhD in Marketing from the University of Leeds and have years of industry experience across FMCG, film, and trade marketing. This mix of academic training and hands-on practice shapes how I teach and how I help students connect theory with real‑world decision‑making.

What are you doing differently in your field that you believe is driving real change?

I combine digital tools with analogue thinking by using online platforms and collaborative boards alongside handwritten notes, sketches, and paper‑based idea work. I want students to think beyond screens. I also centre applied learning: students don’t just learn frameworks, they test and adapt them in real situations. They’re collaborators in the learning process, not just recipients.

Students aren’t just recipients of knowledge — they’re collaborators in the learning process.

Tell us about a specific moment when you saw a student transform?

During the Applied Research Project, students worked with a major FMCG company under tight deadlines and high expectations. Many began unsure of themselves, but by the final presentation they were confident, clear, and persuasive. They learned to handle ambiguity, negotiate expectations, and trust their ideas. My role was to guide them by asking tough questions, setting standards, and supporting them through the process, but the transformation was all theirs.

What's something about Monash University, Indonesia that would surprise people in a good way?

People are often surprised by how deeply student experience shapes everything we do. The campus culture is fair, inclusive, and respectful, and the scale allows for close engagement. We aim for rigorous learning without making students feel overwhelmed or dismissed, a balance that makes meaningful teaching possible.

What industry partnerships or real‑world projects are you and your students involved in?

My students work directly with industry partners to solve real communication and marketing challenges. With INFIA Group, they analyse live social‑media data to generate strategic insights. With ParagonCorp, they explore how digital communication shapes consumer behaviour and brand positioning under professional constraints. I’m also developing a research collaboration with BCA Digital on inclusive financial access and how digital tools can support underserved communities.

How would you explain your research impact or teaching philosophy to a student's parents?

Education isn’t about authority, it's about growth. My classroom is collaborative and respectful, where students learn to think independently, communicate clearly, and navigate complexity with integrity. I challenge them, but I also learn from them. My goal is to help them become capable professionals and good people.

What achievement are you most proud of, and why?

I'm proud of taking an unconventional path into academia. My years in industry shaped my resilience and grounded my teaching in real practice. That experience helps me bring balance, relevance, and perspective to my research and my students.

What advice would you give a student who hopes to build a similar career?

Work hard, stay humble, and don’t try to succeed alone. Be generous with your knowledge, support your peers, and remember that character matters as much as technical skill. Collaboration and kindness will take you far.
