Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) PhD students compete annually in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, hoping ultimately to represent Monash University at the Asia-Pacific Final.
An 80,000 word PhD thesis would take nine hours to present. Students competing in 3MT have just 3 minutes! With only one slide to assist them, students must explain their research compellingly – and in language that can be understood by a general audience.
There were nine strong contenders in the Monash BDI Graduate School 3MT finals held this week. Tightly contested, the two winners were Monica Goney and Rebecca Johnson, each taking home $200 and who will now compete in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (FMNHS) 3MT Final taking place on 13 July. Congratulations to Monica, from the Department of Physiology, who delivered her talk titled “Making super grannies” and also to Rebecca, from the Department of Microbiology, who presented a compelling talk titled “Discovering new viruses in Australian fruit bats”.
The runner-up was Mayra Machuca, from the Department of Micriobiology, who receives $100 and the opportunity to represent the Monash BDI Graduate School at the Faculty final should either Monica or Rebecca be unable to present on the day. Mayra’s talk was titled “Chemotaxis: a bacterium’s love story”.
