Research Training Showcase

Behind every treatment that improves human health is a story of discovery.

The inaugural Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) Research Training Showcase offered undergraduate students the opportunity to hear from and engage with researchers from the various programs and departments across the institute.

The showcase—held on Thursday 13 September— aimed to improve the visibility of the research and the research training opportunities available to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Monash BDI.

Starting with an introduction from Professor John Carroll, Director of the Monash BDI, the evening included a presentation from Associate Professor Priscilla Johanesen and a number of current students.

Professor Johanesen discussed the benefits of undertaking research training, including the development of transferable skills. Training the next generation of scientists is central to what we do, and we have students contributing to our research at the undergraduate level through Research in Action electives and through our Summer and Winter Research Scholarship Program, and at the graduate level through our Honours, Masters and Doctoral (PhD) programs.

The presenting students, who had all either completed, or are completing one of these programs in biomedical science, spoke on their experience and what they had got out of research training.

Following the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to talk to representatives from each of the Monash BDI research programs and departments, who were able to answer questions about the courses on offer, why to study at the Monash BDI, and how to go about applying for one of our research programs. Roughly 22 staff and students volunteered at the event.

There was a lot of interest from students from a variety of degrees, such as Bachelors of Science, Biomedical Science and Medicine. Professor John Carroll was pleased with the success of the evening.

“We’re always looking to recruit outstanding scientists and students,” Professor Carroll said.

“It was great to see such enthusiasm amongst undergraduate students for the research opportunities we have to offer them,” he said.
