Capping off 2018 education successes
2018 ended on a high note for the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute’s (BDI) education team. After the success of their busy schedule of events, programs and awards, the year concluded impressively with a number of achievements.
Acting Director of Education, Associate Professor Liz Davis, congratulated all involved for their achievements.
“These awards certainly attest to the quality and commitment of the educators within the Monash BDI,” she said.
MSA Above and Beyond Teaching Award – Dr Ari Pinar
Dr Ari Pinar was honoured with the Monash Student Association’s Above and Beyond Teaching Award. This award is given to an educator who has gone well above and beyond what is expected, to create a better learning experience for students.
“I am thankful and truly appreciative to be the recipient of this award, in recognition of my service to our undergraduate community,” Dr Pinar said.
“I would like to add that this award should equally be credited to the amazing team of educators and academics whom I work alongside, who are driven to provide the best possible education experience for our students,” he said.
ASCEPT Gillian Shenfield Early Educator Award – Dr Klaudia Budzyn
Dr Klaudia Budzyn received the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT) Gillian Shenfield Early Educator Award.
ASCEPT rewards early career educators for the development and reporting of education initiatives which enhance the quality of pharmacology education and encourage evidence-based approaches to new teaching initiatives. Dr Budzyn’s study focused on student perceptions of written feedback.
“We often notice that students don’t always act on the feedback we given them on lab reports. This suggests they don’t engage with the feedback process,” Dr Budzyn said.
“I wanted to gain some insight into how our students perceive the current written feedback given, and test a more novel feedback method to see if they engage better with this,” she said.
“In our survey, we discovered that many students don’t fully understand the feedback provided. Therefore, we need to focus on this in future, being clear about how they can apply it to future tasks.”
Purple awards for biomedical science units
Ten biomedical science units were awarded Purple Awards in 2018. Purple Awards are given to units that are considered to have exceeded the aspirational requirements of student and teaching surveys (SETU). To be considered a purple unit, it needs to achieve a high median score for the survey question ‘Overall, I was satisfied with this unit’.
