Monash researcher awarded prestigious Humboldt Fellowship for global research in AI and antimicrobial resistance

Dr Jinxin Zhao, a Research Fellow in Professor Jian Li’s laboratory, has received the highly competitive Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, recognising his emerging leadership in the fight against antimicrobial resistance through artificial intelligence and advanced computational biology. Widely regarded as one of the most selective and internationally recognised research programs globally, the fellowship supports outstanding researchers with exceptional academic achievement, originality and leadership potential.

After completing his PhD at Monash University's Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), Dr Zhao has established himself as an emerging leader in computational biology and antimicrobial pharmacology. His research focuses on applying advanced data-driven and mechanistic modelling approaches to address the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). By combining artificial intelligence, systems pharmacology and multi-omics data, his work seeks to optimise antimicrobial therapies and accelerate model-informed drug development.

The latest recognition follows another significant achievement for Dr Zhao, who recently received a DAAD AInet Fellowship, further enhancing his international profile in AI-driven biomedical research.

His pioneering research in single-cell microbial science has also attracted international attention. Earlier this year, his work was selected as a top-rated abstract at ESCMID Global 2026, one of the world's leading conferences in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, underscoring the impact and significance of his contributions to the field.

As a Humboldt Fellow, Dr Zhao will undertake cutting-edge research focused on AI-enabled modelling of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. The project will integrate single-cell and multi-omics data to provide deeper insights into how microbes respond to treatment, helping to advance precision approaches to infectious disease management.

The fellowship will be hosted in collaboration with Professor Jan Baumbach at the University of Hamburg and the Institute for Computational Systems Biomedicine, an internationally recognised research hub at the intersection of artificial intelligence, network biology and precision medicine. The opportunity will enable Dr Zhao to strengthen international research partnerships while contributing to global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance, one of the most pressing healthcare challenges of the 21st century.

This achievement reflects the strength of Monash University's research excellence and its growing impact in AI-enabled biomedical innovation, while reinforcing the University's commitment to addressing critical global health challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and world-class discovery research.
