Account from Blake and Marris of the BDI Benchwarmers:

On Friday 17August, 30 Monash BDI researchers converged on Royal Park to take part in the Medical Research Institute Cup.

In a round-robin style format of Australian rules football, the BDI Benchwarmers faced off against the Peter Mac Bloods in game one. Despite a gallant performance from all, including many new to the game and others who thought themselves long since retired, the Benchwarmers fell just short of a slick Peter Mac team.

After a quick pep-talk, plenty of strapping tape and some orange wedges, game two kicked off against the LIMS Lasers (La Trobe). With a newfound confidence – and despite some wayward kicking from our self-proclaimed spearhead – the Lasers were comfortably seen off and the Benchwarmers claimed their maiden victory.

With one win and one loss for the day, the Monash BDI team had to settle for third place, behind the Peter Mac Bloods and the unbeaten WEHI Wombats.

Enormous thanks to all the players who trained so hard through all sorts of weather these last few months and who showed up and played with such enthusiasm on Friday. Thanks also to Professor John Carroll for so enthusiastically supporting the conception of the team (and then carrying the forward line on game day) and to Meg Lukies for organising just about everything else along the way. Finally, thanks and congratulations to all the players from LIMS, WEHI and Peter Mac for making it a social, competitive and rewarding day out.

Until next year - up the Benchies!
