Cancer collaborations and research showcase
Outstanding research requires collaboration; it allows for cross-pollination of ideas and the development of truly innovative discoveries.
Bringing together experts in the field of cancer research, the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI)/Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Joint Research and Technology Symposium offered an opportunity for researchers from each institute to establish collaborative linkages with their peers and showcase their latest research and technology.
Researchers from both Monash BDI and Peter Mac presented their research throughout the day. Presentations were split into three sessions, which broke down the research areas into three broad topics: Immuno-oncology, platform technologies and cancer signalling and metabolism. Each session was co-chaired by researchers from each institute.
The symposium was the brain-child of Professor Roger Daly, Head of the Monash BDI’s Cancer Program and Dr Renea Taylor, Deputy Director of the Program.
The goal was to build on the recent establishment of a formal affiliation between the Monash BDI and Peter Mac and establish new collaborations that lead to high impact research outcomes.
“I think that everyone present was excited and inspired by the quality of science on display, and the opportunities for future interactions. Some important outcomes are already evident,” Professor Daly said.
“Next year we plan to hold a similar meeting focused on research translation, which will assist Monash BDI researchers with establishment of critical clinical linkages,” he said.
This one day event, held on Tuesday 2 October at Monash College in Melbourne, was a great success. More than 100 scientists attended, and feedback from researchers at both institutes has been positive.
