Monash BDI researchers among world’s most highly cited scientists

Professor Jian Li and Professor Charles Mackay

Two Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) researchers are among an exclusive list of scientists globally whose papers are in the top 1% of most cited works in their field.

Professor Jian Li and Professor Charles Mackay were each ranked as a 2017 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics. This year’s list of the world’s most impactful scientific researchers was formed from an estimated two million-plus papers.

Professor Li is a world leader in pharmacological research against antibiotic-resistant 'superbugs', heading a group that is pioneering findings into a class of antibiotics called polymyxins. He is known for the translation of this work into the discovery of new-generation polymyxins. He is a key member of BDI’s Antimicrobial Resistance Group.

“I am thrilled that our polymyxin research is recognised by peers and is changing the clinical practice globally. Excitingly, our research has led to the discovery of novel, safer antibiotics against Gram-negative ‘superbugs’, one of the world’s biggest health challenges. I would like to thank my collaborators and hard-working team,” Professor Li said.

This is the third time Professor Li has been identified as a Highly Cited researcher.

Professor Mackay has forged new understanding into the gut microbiome and the important role it plays in immune responses including allergies and in a number of diseases including type 1 diabetes. His research into how immune responses can be manipulated using 'medicinal foods', as well as novel gut microbial species, is attracting keen interest. He was highly cited from 2005 to 2010 under what was then the ISI citation.

“I am happy to a HiCi again this year,” Professor Mackay said.

“The Monash environment contributed through great students and post docs who did all the work, and the superb support at Monash at many levels,” he said.

Monash BDI Director Professor John Carroll said, “This is an incredible achievement by Jian and Charles. They should be congratulated; it is a demonstration of truly world-class research that is highly respected by the research community.”
