Strengthening international health and education ties
The Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) recently hosted a delegation from the Indonesian NGO Muhammadiyah. Muhammadiyah has a strong focus on health and education, with an estimated 50 million affiliates, 500 medical clinics and hospitals, and 173 higher education institutions.
Muhammadiyah visited Monash University in order to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the university, which aims to address:
- Strategic partnerships that will support reciprocal professional development, and student and staff mobility;
- Applied research exchange and training;
- Workshops for leadership development of University leaders and members of Muhammadiyah;
- Facilitation of exchanges in innovation through knowledge sharing.
During their two-day visit, the delegation from Muhammadiyah met with Professor John Carroll and senior members of the Monash BDI team, Professor Janet Macaulay and Associate Professor Priscilla Johanesen.
Professor Carroll spoke of the importance of strengthening ties between Australian and Indonesian institutions.
“Indonesia is undergoing a dramatic economic development and the challenges and opportunities are immense,” Professor Carroll said.
“I look forward to progressing the opportunities and doing what we can to help in training and education in the biomedical sciences.”
