Mitra 5.0: Collaboration with Monash University, Indonesia and Traveloka to Develop Digital Talent and Technology

- MITRA 5.0 program has successfully trained 60 lecturers from 35 universities from all over Indonesia
- The first phase of the program aims to enhance the educators’ ability to provide knowledge around tech industries for their students which then increase their experience and readiness to enter the workforce
Jakarta, 15 July 2022 – Monash University, Indonesia with Traveloka, through the Traveloka Academy officially completed the first phase of the digital capacity development program “MITRA 5.0” on Friday, 8 July 2022. The program was successfully conducted for four weeks, starting from 17 June 2022, joined by more than 60 academics from various universities in Indonesia, such as the University of Indonesia, IPB University, Diponegoro University, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN), Bina Nusantara University, and others. Throughout the program, the academics learned product development process from the data science, engineering, digital product design, and product management perspective. Monash University, Indonesia and Traveloka developed the MITRA 5.0 program because there is an increasing need for local digital talent, where in Indonesia there is at least only 50% of Indonesian workforce who has basic and intermediate digital skills. On the other hand, those with advanced skills represent only less than 1% of our workforce.
Professor Andrew MacIntyre, President of Monash University, Indonesia stated, “The objective of Monash University, Indonesia is to contribute through various initiatives towards sustainable progress and development for Indonesia’s success. Collaborating with Traveloka Academy, MITRA 5.0 is one of our initiatives as academia – based on the role of higher education - to have capacity-building programs for academicians. I thank all parties involved and hope that the program could inspire and equip academics to produce excellent and competent digital talents to meet the industry needs, especially the technology industry, for the advancement of Indonesia.”
The MITRA 5.0 is designated for developing human capacity and technology innovation, aiming to equip Indonesian academics with case studies from the technology industry. In addition, the program, which has a mission to achieve the government’s target of nine million digital talents by 2030, also provides world-class knowledge to these academics, making the education sector relevant to technological developments. Furthermore, the program is suitable for academics, especially those who are keen to be more active and bridge the gap between the needs of the technology industry and graduates from the higher education sector.
It is projected that Indonesia’s digital economy valuation will reach 4,531 trillion rupiah or equivalent to 315.5 billion US dollars, in 2030. By looking at the growth of the technology industry in Indonesia for the last decade, it is known that innovation in digital product development has increased and contributed significantly to the growth of the digital economy, making Indonesia a prominent player in the global market.
Of course, these opportunities need to be supported by excellent digital talents, and Indonesia is facing a shortage of digital talents especially to meet the Indonesian government’s target of reaching 9 million digital talents by 2030.

Ellen Tuwaidan, Chief People Officer of Traveloka appreciated Traveloka’s first phase of collaboration with Monash University, Indonesia. “Through MITRA 5.0, Monash University, Indonesia and Traveloka Academy work together to support the government by creating a capacity building program for academicians to produce digital talents who are able to meet the industry needs,” explained Ellen. Furthermore, Ellen conveyed her congratulations and hopes for the MITRA 5.0, “I congratulate the participants and I wish all the knowledge and best practices learned could be well-conveyed to the academic community.”

For the past four weeks, the MITRA 5.0 participants, who are academics in the field of Engineering/Computer Science/Technology Information (incl. Data Science); Business and Economics/Social Sciences and Design have obtained the following outcomes:
1. Have been exposed of how Indonesian technology companies, such as Traveloka work in developing digital platforms
2. Have been exposed to the collaborative working approaches among its multi-disciplinary roles to address issues pertaining the tech industries.
3. Have gained the experience of practicing the agile and design thinking approaches which is applicable during the digital product development journey
4. Has advocated in the establishment of the University’s curriculum, syllabus, and literacy that bridges academic preparation with the needs of the industry
5. Have fostered a community of practitioners to continue to advocate for and support in contributing to the mission of preparing nine million digital talents
