What Inspired
What Inspired Monash Batik
Monash Batik design is inspired from Monash University shield, motto, and values. The design weaves tradition and meaning into a visual representation of the culture we strive to live every day. From the open book and the stars of the Southern Cross to the enduring motto "Ancora Imparo", each element inspired the Batik artistry to reflect our culture to learning, discovery, purposeful, collaboration, honesty, and fairness. These values are carried in every thread, brought to life through timeless Indonesian craftsmanship and expressed in Monash’s signature colours: Monash Blue, black, grey, and white.
Pisan Bali
The Jagatan Pisang/Pisan Bali/Pisang Bali batik pattern is inspired by the stylized depiction of banana trees that grow abundantly in Bali. The motif resembles banana leaves symbolizing love, growth, prayers, prosperity, and hope. In Javanese language “Pisan” comes from the word "Sepisan" means "once more" or "return". The pattern can reflect Monash University's dedication to continuous learning and the ongoing pursuit of knowledge as a foundation for personal and collective development. The Pisan Bali pattern represents the open book in the Monash University shield (the pursuit of knowledge), and the University's motto Ancora Imparo (I'am still learning).
Parang
Parang batik pattern is a striking Indonesian design, inspired by the Javanese word for "sword." Its bold diagonal lines evoke the motion of a blade, symbolizing growth, strength, power, and purposeful action—values also reflected in the sword featured in Monash University's logo. Beyond its aesthetic, the Parang pattern reflects resilience and a commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the importance of balance and responsible stewardship. Just as Monash University champions sustainable practices, the Parang design reminds us of the need for thoughtful, long-lasting impact on our environment and communities. The Parang pattern represents the sword & wreath in the Monash University shield, and reflects the University’s foundational values of purpose, fairness, and honesty.
Kawung
The Kawung batik pattern features elegant circular motifs inspired by flowers and fruit, symbolizing the cycle of life and growth. It reflects the believe in structured universe. The cross in the center represents a universal source of energy. This continuous cycle reflects Monash University's commitment to lifelong learning and discovery, emphasizing the pursuit of knowledge and personal development. The Kawung pattern reflects Monash University’s foundations of learning, discovery, fairness, and collaboration.
Truntum
Truntum Batik is a timeless Indonesian design symbolizing loyalty, growth, and aspiration. Historically, it was created as a reflection of unconditional and unwavering love. The Truntum pattern also bears a resemblance to the Southern Cross stars, mirroring the celestial elements found in Monash University's logo. The Truntum pattern represents the Stars of the Southern Cross from the Monash University shield and symbolises the University’s values of purposefulness and honesty.
