The end of yo-yo dieting? Monash researchers uncover brain switch that controls fat burning

L-R: Alex Reichenbach and Associate Professor Zane Andrews.

Research led by Monash BDI’s Associate Professor Zane Andrews received significant media coverage, including front page articles in The Age and the Herald Sun, publication in multiple Fairfax Media and News Corp outlets, Brightsurf, Fox Hit, Nine News , MSN Lifestyle, Medindia, Medical Express, Mamamia and Celebrity Rave.

Associate Professor Andrews was interviewed on the Today Show and Sunrise, and featured on Channel 9, Channel 10, Southern Cross News and SBS News. He was also interviewed on 3AW and ABC Radio Melbourne.

Published in Cell Reports, Associate Professor Andrews has identified a protein in mice, called carnitine acetyltransferase (Crat), in hunger-processing brain cells that regulates fat storage after dieting. Repeated dieting may lead to weight gain because the brain interprets these diets as short famines and urges the person to store more fat for future shortages. Read our full press release here.
