Unlocking Future Leaders: Monash University's Pathways in Indonesia Supports the Journey for 'Indonesia Emas 2045' Goal
Jakarta, June 3, 2024 - Indonesia's current demographic bonus, projected to last until 2030, is causing worry among young people about their future job prospects, especially with the expected impact of artificial intelligence (AI) potentially affecting 70% of existing jobs. According to the latest data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), nearly 10 million Gen Z individuals in Indonesia are still unemployed. The Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) has indicated "choosing the wrong major" during tertiary education as one of the contributing factors to this phenomenon.
In response to this challenge, Monash University, Indonesia, offers a variety of industry-relevant Master's programs designed to address the evolving demands of future professions. These programs include Business Innovation, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Urban Design, Public Health, Public Policy and Management, Marketing and Digital Communications programs, and the upcoming Master of Sustainability program. These programs are in high demand globally and align with future job market needs, providing a promising pathway to professional success in support of the government's Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
Tantia Dian Permata Indah, COO and Vice President of Operations and Enterprise, stated, "The variety of Master's programs we offer demonstrates the University's dedication to developing future talents. We are optimistic that we can cultivate forward-thinking and visionary leaders that will propel the growth of Indonesia’s economy into the future. We can achieve this through a blend of transformative learning and a high-quality curriculum tailored to the Indonesian context."

According to a survey by The Economist, a prominent economic and business publication, 60% of workers in Indonesia prioritise the development of digital skills, while 88.3% of respondents consider these skills to be a crucial foundation.
Interestingly, some of these programs do not have work experience requirements for registration. Monash University, Indonesia, is also recognized as a top destination for higher education, particularly for domestic scholarship programs such as the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) and Australia Awards Indonesia Nusantara. This recognition further enhances the appeal for changemakers to join these programs.
Monash University, Indonesia's strategic plan this year is to enhance the quality of higher education in Indonesia. One of their initiatives is collaborating with 10 leading private universities to encourage graduates to pursue further studies at the Master's level with various benefits. Monash University, Indonesia, also provides study opportunities at Indonesian and Australian campuses. A recent example is their partnership with PT PLN (Persero), which allows employees to pursue a one-year Master of Business Innovation program at the Indonesian campus and a one-year Master of Engineering program at the Australian campus.
Monash University, Indonesia, held a masterclass titled ‘Strategic Communications in the Digital Era’ with Triana Hadiprawoto, Assistant Professor, introducing its latest Marketing and Digital Communications program.
Driving change: the University's dedication to impactful research in Indonesia
As Monash University, Indonesia, enters its third year since its official establishment, the University has achieved several outstanding milestones in making a meaningful impact in the country.
Amid Indonesia's dynamic political landscape, Monash University, Indonesia, garnered widespread attention for its multifaceted engagement and participation surrounding the 2024 Indonesian elections. The University’s academic contributions, from data scientists to communications expertise, garnered widespread attention from high-profile international, national, and regional publication platforms. A notable contribution was the Hate Speech Monitoring Dashboard launch, an AI-based tool developed by Associate Professor Ika Idris and Derry Widjaya from the Data and Democracy Hub in collaboration with AJI (Alliance on Independent Journalists Indonesia). The dashboard’s findings highlight an increase in hate speech targeting minorities, underscoring the need for proactive measures against divisive rhetoric.

This dashboard tracks hate speech in real time on three social media platforms from September 1, 2023, to January 2024.
"Monash Data and Democracy Research Hub and Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub Indonesia Node are among the research centres we have established to address local and global challenges. We are committed to playing an integral role in nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators and creating a brighter, more inclusive future. This positive outlook forms the basis of the University's commitment to research excellence," explained Associate Professor Ika Idris, Public Policy and Management, who also serves as Co-Director of the Data & Democracy Research Hub (Indonesia).
Sabina Satriyani Puspita, Assistant Professor, Public Policy and Management at Monash University Indonesia, presents several research findings conducted by the university's research hub.
Meanwhile, Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub Indonesia previously launched a book titled "Navigating Climate Change Issues in the 2024 Election," which addressed the gap between young voters' climate concerns and political neglect, emphasising the importance of fostering better dialogue to boost climate change literacy among both the public and political leaders.
Additionally, other impactful publications include a paper featured in Science in 2023 titled “Impacts of metal mining on river systems: a global assessment,” and The Lancet Global Health titled “Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis control in Indonesia: a nationwide longitudinal analysis of program data.”
