Professor Alberta Hoi is an eminent rheumatologist and clinician-researcher dedicated to advancing outcomes patients with autoimmune diseases. As a leading expert in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), she brings over 25 years of clinical experience in management of complex multi-organ autoimmune conditions including SLE, Sjogren disease, vasculitis, and dermatomyositis. Her research focusses on disease predictors and outcomes, the design and implementation of registries, quality of care and patient-centred approaches.

Prof Hoi obtained her undergraduate medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1996, and subsequently completed a Doctor of philosophy in immunology under an NHMRC scholarship at Monash University. She is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physician and member of the Australian Rheumatology Association (ARA). Clinically, she serves as Head of Monash Lupus Clinic, and attends the Complex Rheumatology Clinic at Monash Health, and Autoimmune Clinic at Austin Health.

In her role as Chief Investigator and Head of the Lupus+ Clinical Research Hub at the School of Clinical Sciences, Monash University. She has led the development of core measurement sets and conducted studies into factors that determine optimal outcomes in SLE. She was pivotal in the successful roll out of the Australian Lupus Registry & Biobank in 2015, a key resource fostering collaboration between clinicians and translational scientists both nationally and internationally.

Her work has been supported by grants from Arthritis Australia, Perpetual IMPACT philanthropy program, Medical Research Future Fund, and various industry partners. She has been recognised with the Australian Rheumatology Association President Prize’s for Collaborative Research. As Principal Investigator, she oversees numerous Phase 2/3 clinical trials in SLE and Sjogren’s Disease, including serving as the Australian rheumatology lead for the first CAR-T therapy trial. Additionally, she is Chair of the Australian Lupus Registry & Biobank, and a founding member of the Asia-Pacific Lupus Collaboration (APLC) where she also serves on the executive committee.  Find out more from Prof Alberta Hoi's Monash profile.
