Nevin John
Dr Nevin John is a Consultant Neurologist and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) specialist at Monash Health since 2021 and is the clinical lead for the MS group. He has clinical expertise in inflammatory and autoimmune disorders affecting the nervous system. Dr John has been the head of the MS service since January 2022, overseeing a unit that looks after more than 1500 patients with neuroinflammatory disorders across Southeastern Victoria.
Dr John completed his PhD on MRI markers in progressive multiple sclerosis in December 2021 at the Queen Square MS Centre at University College London. He is a current research fellow in the Department of Medicine at the School of Clinical Sciences. Dr John has research expertise in magnetic resonance imaging and analysis, data analysis using R statistical software, adult-onset leukodystrophy, and biomarkers in MS, including optical coherence tomography.

- NHMRC Ideas Grant (2037776). Award amount: $1,359,383. Title: Pregnancy and the MS Brain. This grant investigates the impact of pregnancy on the MS brain using MRI and fluid biomarkers.
Dr John is also a chief investigator on the following MRFF grants:
- MRFF (2024553) $2,000,000. Title: Applying OCCAMS molecular razor to study the role of EBV in MS pathogenesis.
- MRFF (2032017) $1,498,776. Title: A clinician-led feasibility, acceptability and pilot efficacy intervention to improve bone health and muscle strength in people with multiple sclerosis
Dr John’s MS research focuses on epidemiology, including geospatial analysis, risk factors, comorbidities, and their effect on MS outcomes, magnetic resonance imaging, and pregnancy. He is also a site primary investigator for the MS base registry – an international database that can be used to interrogate clinical questions in MS.
Dr John currently supervises 6 students who are completing projects in MS diagnosis, MRI prognostic markers, and visual biomarkers in neuroinflammatory disorders. He also supervises 1 honours student.
