Prof Yahya Shehabi leads the research team and activities within the Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, Monash University. He is dual qualified in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Technology, Sydney. Prof Shehabi holds a conjoint Professorial appointment at the School of Medicine, University of New South Wales.
Professor Shehabi holds multiple NHMRC project grants award and has recently been awarded a $4.9 million;a Clinical Trial and Cohort Scheme NHMRC 2020, to conduct a multinational randomised trial of dexmedetomidine vs placebo in elderly ventilated critically ill patients.
Professor Shehabi led many investigator initiated large scale clinical trials, the last of which was SPICE III, published in the NEJM in June 2019. Through his work on sedation and delirium, Professor Shehabi is a world authority on these topics.
Professor Shehabi supervised many PhD students and medical student doing honours degrees. Beside his active research career, Professor Shehabi has an active clinical load both in ICU and in Cardiac Anaesthesia.
