eGazette - October 2014 issue

Much of our planning over the past few years is bearing fruit. The new chemical sciences building is about to open, our new program - the BSc Global Challenges - is being hailed a great success by students and external supporters; and we are welcoming many new high calibre academics to our faculty. We have built a new school - Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, are planning new Masters programs and continuing to create dynamic learning spaces and areas for students to interact. My focus has also been on expanding my own research program, Eliminate Dengue, in parts of the developing world. Please join me too, in welcoming President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AO to Monash.

An Australian Laureate Fellowship for Kate

Of 16 Australian Laureate fellowships awarded this year two researchers are from Monash - and one from the Faculty of Science. Professor Kate Smith Miles - an applied mathematician and inaugural Director of MAXIMA - is the first female professor from Monash to be awarded the Laureate Fellowship. Read more. Looking at the future through graphene

Monash physicist, Michael Fuhrer 's new light detector could revolutionise chemical sensing and night vision technology. In the journal Nature Nanotechnology, Michael shows how graphene can be used to build a detector of long wavelength (far infrared or terahertz) light that is as sensitive as any existing detector, but far smaller and more than a million times faster. Philanthropy for dengue research

The Melbourne-based Gillespie Family Foundation is now supporting the Eliminate Dengue: Our Challenge research program which is working to curb the spread of the deadly disease. Read more.

Yap Soo Huey walked away from a lab career to pursue politics in Penang, Malaysia. Her science background has served her well in her new career, helping her manage the information deluge that has come with her life as a politician. Read more.

Svetozar Kovacevic, microbiologist, is now working in the diplomatic space as Science and Innovation Officer with the British High Commission. He helps build scientific collaborations between the UK and Australia.

The new school of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment has brought together staff in the former School of Geosciences; the School of Mathematics' Atmospheric group; and the physical geography group from the Faculty of Arts' School of Geography and Environmental Science. Read more.
