Faadhila Ziyad is a STEM Cadet at the Defence Science and Technology Group in the food and nutrition branch, focusing on ensuring that serving personnel meet their nutritional needs. She manages data, processes, and analyses information to support research projects and conducts academic research to develop innovative solutions.

Her career includes an internship at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, where she worked on malaria research in the McCarthy Lab. She was later promoted to Biobank Manager at the Gras Lab, conducting critical experiments on immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines and managing the Bio Bank's operations, including donor correspondence and data organisation.

What drew you to Monash University?

Monash's science facilities were perfect for hands-on learning and research, making the learning experience practical and engaging. I also appreciated the industry experience opportunities along with the flexibility in the degree structure and transfer options.

My degree has been instrumental in advancing my career by offering valuable industry experience and creating numerous job opportunities. The hands-on internships provided practical skills and real-world insights, boosting my employability and connecting me with professional networks. It also allowed me to explore new interests, such as law, and integrate them into my studies. This flexibility and interdisciplinary approach broadened my knowledge and made me more versatile in my career.

Why would you recommend a career in science? 

I recommend a career in this industry for its unique blend of intellectual challenge, practical application, and societal impact. Working in science and technology, especially within defence and human systems, allows you to contribute to advancements that enhance national security and public well-being. Additionally, the industry offers diverse professional growth opportunities. Combining science and law, such as in Intellectual Property (IP), is exciting by merging innovation, legal protection, and business strategy.
