Information for offshore domestic students

The information below is for domestic students who are currently studying overseas and/or who have completed an international or New Zealand high school qualification.

You are a domestic student if you are: an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, a New Zealand citizen, or a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa.

Entry requirements for offshore domestic students can differ from those listed on the Monash website for international students. The reason for this is that domestic students are eligible to apply for SEAS - VTAC’s universal Special Entry Access Scheme. You will also need to meet all subject prerequisites for the particular course that you are applying for.

Assumed knowledge (international qualifications only - excluding IB, and Australian Year 12 programs)

If you have completed a Monash approved international senior secondary qualification (or higher qualification) with maths and/science at the required level, it will be assumed that students have reached the level of knowledge equivalent to the VCE prerequisite required for the Monash course.

To support students’ preparation for their course, Monash will strongly recommend in the offer letter that students strengthen their knowledge in the relevant areas by completing specific online maths and/or science modules before commencing their studies at Monash University.

Entry requirements for students studying in New Zealand

Specific information for New Zealand students studying in New Zealand can be found below:

Do I need to complete an English language test?

If you have completed high school in an English speaking country, there is a good chance you don’t need an English Language test, especially if you completed an English or English-rich subject as part of your final year of schooling.

If you haven't completed at least six years of schooling in an English medium institution in an English-speaking country, before the age of 19, you can meet the English language requirements through a range of ways. These can include tertiary study, an English language course or an English language test.

Please read carefully through the English language requirements.

Please be aware that some courses may have a higher English language requirement.

So you meet the entry requirements and you’re keen to apply - great!

Apply through VTAC

All domestic applications are submitted through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).

Application checklist

Carefully read the VTAC dates for the intake that you are applying for.
Semester 1 Intake: If you are wanting to start in the Semester 1 intake, you will need to apply the previous year through VTAC from late July. Don’t leave it too late, as the cost of applying increases the longer you leave it.
If you are waiting for results, you can still apply through VTAC. You can provide your results later as long as they are released before offers go out.
Semester 2 (mid-year) intake: If you are wanting to apply mid-year for a July (Semester 2) start, VTAC will open in April of that year.
We recommend that every domestic student submit a SEAS application - Special Entry Access Scheme. A comprehensive guide on how to apply through VTAC can be found here, including information on SEAS.
Go to CourseSearch and find the VTAC codes for the courses you want to add to your preference list. You will have eight preferences that you can order from most preferred to least preferred.
Make sure you include the Course code for the Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) (see below for more information). You will be able to change your preferences during the "change of preference" periods.
For speedy processing of your application, you will need to provide the following documentation. If you haven’t provided all the documents we need, we can’t process your application. If you are waiting on results, please make sure you upload them as soon as you receive them.
- Evidence of citizenship
- Official high school academic transcripts from the awarding body
- Official evidence of completion (e.g. high school diploma)
- English language test results (if applicable)
Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are eligible to apply for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), which is subsidised by the Australian Government.
If you are an Australian citizen, you can apply for a HECS-HELP loan to defer the cost of your university fees. You will need to apply for a tax file number as part of the process.
Note that if you are an Australian permanent resident or a New Zealand citizens, you cannot apply for a HECS-HELP loan. You must pay your student contribution up front each semester.

Congratulations! You’ve received an offer for your Monash Science course! What do I do now?

1. Head to the Get Started website and step through the steps to create your Monash account. This should be provided in your VTAC offer letter.
2. To accept your offer, you need to enrol into units. If you haven’t enrolled into units, you have not accepted your offer. You need to accept your offer by enrolling in units by the offer lapse date, that will be outlined in your offer letter that you received through VTAC. You can change your unit selection later.
3. At the point of enrollment, you will also need to provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you are a permanent resident or NZ citizen residing offshore, you may need to request a waiver for this step through Monash Connect as you will not be able to apply for a USI until you arrive onshore. If you get stuck on this step, please contact us directly at sci-futurestudents@monash.edu or make an appointment.
Yes! If you change your mind about your subjects, you can change your enrolment - just keep an eye on the key cut-off dates, and more importantly, the census date.
If you are still enrolled in a unit at census date, you will have to pay for that unit, regardless of whether or not you complete it.
If you receive an offer but don’t wish to commence your degree until the following semester or year, you can defer your offer. Make sure you do this before the deadline!

Living on campus is a great way to make new friends and is quite cost-effective compared to other types of accommodations.

BIG TIP - apply for accommodation early! Rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so it’s important you know the dates applications open and apply as soon as you can.

If you are commencing in Semester 1, you will need to apply for accommodation in September of the year prior.
If you are starting mid-year, applications will open in April of that year.
