As a science communicator, Persie translates complex scientific knowledge into engaging content for non-experts, including policymakers and the public. He helps prepare reports using accessible language and facilitates consultations with experts, government, and industry stakeholders. This approach ensures that the reports are accurate and include diverse perspectives.

Persie has contributed to CSIRO reports on energy and minerals, including sustainable aviation fuels and critical minerals. One highlight of his work was assessing Australia's research, development, and demonstration capabilities for rare earth elements, which are crucial for electric vehicles and wind turbines. This work involved gathering insights and engaging with key industry players and international researchers, including attending the 2023 Australian Rare Earth Conference to connect with experts in the field. Persie keeps expanding his expertise in critical minerals through a global project that strengthens Australia's partnerships with other countries.

What drew you to Monash University?

Persie chose Monash for its ''one-of-a-kind" Global Challenges science degree, which offers a hands-on, personalised approach to learning. This program encourages collaboration, skill-building, and real-world engagement. It also provides opportunities for Honours students to work with industry partners, giving practical experience. The course inspired him to think outside the box and take risks.

How was your time studying at Monash?

Persie deeply values meaningful connections with the talented and supportive Monash community. The course inspired him to think differently and take risks. Persi also values the deep and meaningful connections he made with the wonderfully talented and caring community of students, staff and alumni of the course.

How did your course help with professional development?

The Global Challenges degree taught Persie practical skills such as ethical research, critical thinking, and effective communication. Most importantly, it sharpened his collaboration abilities, enabling him to see the big picture and value his work in essential mineral activities. Persie is now confident working with others and adept at understanding diverse perspectives to facilitate meaningful conversations.

What messages, advice or tips would you like to share with current and future students? 

Keep an open mind and get to know yourself—your passions, motivations, strengths, and values. Knowing your values helps you view challenges as opportunities and fosters positive thinking, which is crucial in today's fast-paced world. And remember to enjoy your time as a student and the vibrant community around you!
