How to apply

The Faculty of Science offers PhD and master’s by research degrees across a broad range of disciplines spanning the biological, chemical, mathematical and physical sciences.

This page outlines the Faculty of Science–specific requirements for your application. For university-wide eligibility requirements, dates and application instructions, visit the Monash University Graduate Research How to Apply page.

Step 1. Check your eligibility

Eligibility requirements for graduate research degrees at Monash are set centrally. Firstly, confirm you meet the requirements for your intended course.

Step 2. Before you apply

A well-prepared application starts before you begin the form. Work through the steps below to prepare for your application.

Finding the right supervisor is one of the most important steps in your application.
Explore the our Find a Supervisor directory to identify a suitable academic whose research interests align with your own.
Supervisor availability and alignment with the proposed research topic will be considered as part of the application assessment process.
The application form includes several mandatory fields about your proposed research project. However, at the application submission stage, you are only required to complete the “Expertise Statement and Motivation” section.
The application form will ask you to provide:
- Expertise Statement and Motivation (required at the application submission stage)
- Research Title
- Research Summary
- Research Proposal
What you need to complete now
Please use the “Expertise Statement and Motivation” section to clearly and thoroughly outline:
- Your academic background and technical skills
- Your research experience
- Your areas of interest
- Why you are a strong fit for graduate research
A strong and well-articulated response in this section is critical to your application.
What you do not need to complete yet
You are not required to develop a "Research Title", "Research Summary", or "Research Proposal" at this stage.
For these fields, please:
- Enter “To be negotiated” in the "Research Title" and "Research Summary" free-text sections
- Upload a blank document for the Research Proposal attachment
These components will be developed in collaboration with your supervisor once a supervisory arrangement has been confirmed.
In your application, please ensure to include all documentation that demonstrates your relevant academic background and, where applicable, any prior research experience.

Step 3. Key dates

The application rounds for the Monash University Graduate Research Scholarships are below and on the University How to Apply page.

The above-mentioned scholarship closing dates are applicable for Monash Australia only. Applicants to the School of Science at Monash University Malaysia should refer to the Monash Malaysia graduate research page for application guidance.

Admission-only applications can be submitted at any time throughout the year.

Applications are submitted through the central My.App portal. Before you begin, review the Application Submission Guide for a full list of required supporting documentation.

Step 5. What happens next?

Once you submit your application, it will be directed to your nominated supervisor and the Faculty for review. You may be contacted if further information is required or to discuss your application.

Applications are assessed based on academic achievement, research potential, and alignment with available supervision and faculty research strengths.

Requirement for R2 (Domestic) 2026 applications ONLY View

Submit an "Expression of Interest" and receiving an "invitation to apply"

IMPORTANT: From 13 April 2026, the expression of interest process described below continues to apply for Round 2 (domestic) 2026 applications only.

Complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) and you may receive an invitation to apply.

Submitting an Expression of Interest is easy: Find a prospective supervisor and then select the corresponding School for that supervisor.
Follow the guidelines for that School on how to submit your Expression of Interest.
When expressing your interest please ensure to provide the following:
- Undergraduate and Postgraduate Academic Transcripts (Certified English Translation)
- IELTS/TOEFL test results (if applicable): MUST have been completed within two years of proposed commencement date
- Publications, Awards, References
- Curriculum Vitae
- Evidence of relevant Work Experience
Note: If the relevant School requires you submit an Expression of Interest via a Google form, you will be asked to provide a URL to a single PDF consisting of the supporting documents listed above, shared via Google Drive.
Please ensure under sharing settings you enable “all” to view the documents.

Please note: The EOI closing date for Round 2 (Domestic) is Friday 8th May.
DOMESTIC (Round 2)
Opens 1 November, closes 31 May.
By submitting an EOI, you may be issued with an 'invitation to apply' via email, which entitles you to proceed to formally apply for admission to a graduate research degree and scholarships.
Should you be issued with an 'invitation to apply', you MUST upload it to the online application form as evidence of successfully completing an EOI.
Please note: An 'invitation to apply' is NOT an offer of admission to a graduate research degree NOR an offer of scholarship.
