Analyst Oliver Clemenston was thrown in at the deep end and started his career in the depth of a financial market crash. “Starting this way allowed me to accelerate my learning and gain a greater insight into the decision-making processes behind investing,” Oliver said. These days he is an analyst with Australian Super where his job is to research, inform and assist with portfolio construction activities across the company’s multi-asset class options.
“My role assists with the ongoing monitoring of our investment portfolios across performance, risk and liquidity while also contributing to the evaluation and development of investment strategies,” Oliver said. He was attracted to Australian Super by the opportunity to work in a large organisation with both personal and professional development opportunities.
"My love for mathematics and thirst for knowledge have resulted in a career I am passionate about today. I love working in finance and have actively recommended it to many students over the years. The investment landscape is forever evolving and changing and provides constant challenges and opportunities to grow."
Oliver knew early on that he wanted a career involving mathematics but didn’t really have an idea of what professions were out there. Completing an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics made him realise that he wanted a career in the finance field but he wasn’t sure how to make a start in this area.
“The Master of Financial Mathematics program at Monash proved to be the perfect platform to continue to improve my theoretical mathematics while also providing me with a better understanding of the finance world and the type of roles available,” Oliver said.
He credits the internship available through the master’s program as contributing to his success today. “Without this internship program I would not be in the position I am today, as this opportunity provided me with my first insight into the industry and allowed me to develop my personal and professional skills.”
