Andrew Chiu always enjoyed mathematics at school and studying pure maths at Monash. Now as a Monash Science graduate Andrew has applied what he learnt at Monash Science to his role as a consultant. As a Senior Analytics consultant with Monitor Deloitte, Andrew partners with businesses to solve their most complex strategic challenges. As a specialist in data science, he uses analytics to enable smart decision-making, using a blend of technical and soft skills to help clients realise the value of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
With a double major in maths and a minor in physics, Andrew has always been keen to explain the world around him. “Mathematics is the foundation of science,” says Andrew, “a method to measure and describe observations across all the other fields. Studying science has encouraged me to develop my critical thinking and problem solving techniques. These skills are highly transferable to many industries. For myself, it allows me to break down business problems to its root causes and uncover areas of improvement.”

Apart from being passionate about data, Andrew’s other passions include travelling and photography – twin passions that go nicely together.
For job seekers looking to get a role in the increasingly competitive job market, Andrew has the following advice, “Focus less on the individual tasks you've done but more on the impact of the achievements you've made. It shows that you can see the greater picture and the difference you can bring. Embrace the new and challenge the old.”
Andrew Chiu always enjoyed mathematics at school and studying pure maths at Monash. As an undergraduate he didn’t know how he would use it professionally. But some research and a dash of initiative helped him land a job he didn’t even know existed - and which he now as a Data Scientist and Senior Analytics Consultant at Monitor Deloitte Australia. Andrew started with the company is a graduate analyst, analysing data for clients and advises them on how they can improve their business using that information. Analytics remains a mystery for most “A lot of people don’t understand what analytics can do for them,” says Chiu. “Before I started here I would have thought an analyst just drew graphs and joined the dots. It’s only when you get your hands into it that you realise the advantages you’re making – you’re learning how people, society and the world are using that to impact the world.”
