Which graduate study option is best for you?

Graduate study - Coursework View

A Graduate Certificate* is a one semester program and can be the first step towards a Graduate Diploma or masters degree. However, students may choose to only complete the certificate qualification. The focus of this program is to develop a set of practical skills in a relatively short period of time. It’s more of a practical qualification and can be used for the next career move, whilst not as costly or time consuming as a Graduate Diploma or Masters degree.

A Graduate Diploma* is a one year program and sits above a Graduate Certificate and just below a masters level degree. Students will undertake this study to not only develop a set of practical skills, but to advance their existing skills that can be used to prepare for a more specialised career.
Graduate Diplomas in cognate study can also reduce the duration of a Masters degree through recognition of prior learning.

A Masters by coursework is a professional qualification involving the study of a specified set of foundation and core units, including specialist study and the option to undertake professional experience through an internship or complete a research project.
Undertaking a coursework program usually means that you will attend classes, complete assignments and sit exams where applicable. Some Masters by Coursework programs also require the completion of a minor thesis as part of the course, and this can be used as a pathway into a Higher Degree by Research.
If you complete an Honours year in a cognate discipline, this could reduce the duration of a Masters program through recognition of prior learning.

Graduate study - Research View

The Bachelor of Science Honours is a one year program combining some coursework and research within a discipline that was studied within your bachelor degree.
Students undertake research methodology training and carry out an independent research project - working closely with a supervisor who provides individual guidance and academic counselling.
Completion of an Honours year offers a pathway to higher degree by research, including the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and through the development of advanced research, analytical, project management and communication skills, this program also enhances employability outcomes.
Master of Philosophy
A Masters by Research is a degree program where students are expected to undertake a research project under the guidance of a supervisor. The main focus is to conduct original research and contribute to the knowledge of that particular field of study. Students are not expected to attend classes or complete assignments or exams.
Students entering this degree are expected to have a strong research background, such as the completion of an Honours year, and they will be required to independently conduct the research, collect data and undertake analysis to submit a final thesis of not more than 35,000 words on their investigation.
A Doctorate of Philosophy or a doctorate by research is the highest level of study offered in Australia.
The core of this program is the completion of a substantial research thesis of not more than 80,000 words on an agreed topic under the guidance of a supervisory team.
The Monash Doctoral program also includes professional development activities or coursework units designed to support your academic and professional development.

Frequently asked questions

Currently there are limited CSPs available. However, most domestic students apply for FEE HELP.
Absolutely. Through the Graduate Internships - our Work Integrated Learning team (WIL) team try to match your interests with an industry partner, or you can source your own if you prefer.
Our masters programs offer you the chance to either work within an organisation or carry out fieldwork and research both locally and internationally for a period of between four weeks and a full semester.
The number of contact hours depends on the mix of units you study semester to semester. In general, a 6 credit point unit is between 2-5 contact hours per week. The internship and thesis units are are more flexible and hours can be driven by the student and supervisors.
If you are a domestic student, you can study part time to full time and change your study load to suit your situation semester by semester.
We do have some flexibility with unit offerings and some of our units have a variety of formats:
- block mode
- scheduled after 6pm to suit professionals
- taught in flexible mode
Please be aware that the entire course is not taught in these modes, however some units may offer these modes of study.
We have returned to face to face teaching, however there maybe some units within your course that are scheduled after work hours and/or offered online/flexible mode.

In the first instance, we suggest researching the Monash Handbook for unit information. The Course Co-ordinator is also available to assist with unit selection and they usually offer appointment times to provide advice for students with offers.
The Welcome and Orientation session in O-Week is another great opportunity to confirm your unit selection decisions, and to also meet the rest of your cohort and the Course Leadership team.
You maybe eligible to receive credit for your prior studies if they are cognate to the course/specialisation you are applying for - credit can reduce the course duration.
A credit assessment needs to be requested during the course application process.
Some of the courses offer a 24 credit point Research thesis unit in Part D of the program. Upon successful completion, students may use this thesis to transition into a PhD.
It really depends upon what you're interested in. It will vary student to student. While we cannot guarantee you employment, the courses are designed to provide the knowledge, skills and experiences required for a career in that particular industry or sector.
