“Due to the wide range of skills I had gained during my university course, I was able to undertake different initiatives and projects”

What drew you to Monash University?

As I hadn't decided on a specific specialisation, the Bachelor of Science at Monash offered a variety of units. The course allowed me to explore and discover my passion. Furthermore, studying at Monash, I got to enjoy the modern aesthetic of the campus.

How was your time studying at Monash?

During my university journey, I got selected to travel for five weeks to Germany and conduct a chemistry project at Leipzig University. However, the most fun I had was in Dunstone Laboratory, where I researched the process of DNA to protein purification and published a journal paper. In addition, I found a great group of people doing the same course as me, which allowed me to form a solid support network and long-lasting friendships.

How did your course help with professional development?

My degree has provided me with a "Science Toolkit"—a collection of experiences and skills applicable in various aspects of my life, both professionally and personally. I participated in initiatives like conducting risk assessments for raw materials, optimising laboratory instruments like the moisture balance to improve workflow efficiencies, and forming a laboratory sustainability committee to reduce waste.

“The demand for scientists, or even people with the ability to think critically, is higher than ever”

Why would you recommend a career in science?

Science is a growing industry, as the world needs scientists and people who can think critically. Especially in the pharmaceutical industry, with inflation growing, breakthroughs are needed. May it be the discovery of a new material, a new way of making products, or the improvement of old techniques.

Enjoy university—it's a place to discover new opportunities, meet like-minded people, and even travel abroad to study. Don't be afraid to try new things and embrace change.
