The Monash University Science Work Experience Program offers secondary students in Year 10 a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of all things Science.

This program aims to offer students a glimpse into the real-world application and professional experiences of a rewarding career in Science.

Throughout the program, students will gain hands-on experience at the Clayton campus, working alongside Monash University staff in state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities.

Participants can choose from a range of streams,: Biology and Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics or Earth, Atmosphere and Environment.

The School of Biological Sciences Year 10 Work Experience program will provide you with clear insights into what it is like to work in a field that makes discoveries about the mysteries of the life that surrounds us. Our School conducts a diverse range of research, including our key themes of Ecology and Conservation, Evolution in a Changing World, and Genetics, Genomics and Health. As part of this week you will:
- Meet and interact with scientists to understand what their day to day work is like
- Undertake activities and tours within our teaching and research facilities
- Work within labs and out in our on-Campus Field site, collecting and analysing data
- Learn more about how learning and research happens at Monash University, including being exposed to future careers you might be interested in

In Chemistry, the work experience program involves you spending one day each in four different areas of the school: Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories, Research Groups, Instrument Services and Administration & Management.
The aim is to give you a well-rounded view of all the different areas of the School of Chemistry that come together to make the School run and highlight the varied activities, including university teaching, advanced scientific research, and the support and management of the whole enterprise. On the middle day of the week, all participants come together for some group activities, as well as (typically) a tour of the Australian Synchrotron, which is adjacent to Monash.

The School of Earth, Atmosphere & Environment Year 10 Work Experience Program offers a dynamic introduction to Earth Sciences, blending hands-on fieldwork, critical thinking, experimental design, and data analysis. Over two immersive days in the field—exploring the coast between Waratah Bay and Inverloch, and the iconic Great Ocean Road—you’ll collect real scientific data, which will be analysed back at our world-class teaching facilities on the Clayton Campus.
Through this experience, you’ll uncover the role of Earth Sciences in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including the renewable energy transition, geohazards, food security, and climate change adaptation. You’ll work side-by-side with active researchers, gaining insight into their work and discovering a range of potential career paths in Earth Sciences. Plus, you’ll get a taste of university life at Monash, all while experiencing firsthand what it's like to be a scientist.

Mathematicians make it possible to harness and improve technology, explore space, shop online, bring animations to our screens, model climates, and solve complex logistic and traffic issues.
But what does a Mathematician do in a day? You’ll participate in a variety of activities, including discussing the mathematics of games, meeting and chatting with mathematicians to gain an insight into their work, and 3D modelling and printing of some weird and wonderful shapes.

Physics is the study of space and time, matter and energy. By carrying out experiments and developing conceptual models, physicists seek to provide a fundamental understanding of how our physical universe works. On the other hand, Astrophysics aims to understand the universe and its composition through observations and the applications of physical laws.
Through this experience in Physics and Astronomy, you could work alongside some of our researchers to gain an insight into their work in astronomy and astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, biomedical imaging, cosmology, condensed matter physics, particle physics, quantum science, synchrotron science and many other topics.

Year 10 students are required to complete the application form below. As part of the application, you are required to provide a written reference from one of your current discipline teachers.

Frequently asked questions

This program is open to all Year 10 students enrolled at a Victorian secondary school in 2026.
The Monash University Year 10 Science Work Experience Program is an approximately four to five-day program run at the end of term 2 or term 3.
The usual working day is 9am-5pm, however your supervisor may contact you with alternate hours.
This will vary depending on the stream. Generally, all students will rotate through a series of areas, including, but not limited to, research, admin, labs and instrumental services.
Please refer to the above dates for all program dates.
Applications must be submitted by the application deadline. No late applications will be considered.
Due to the high demand of our program and the processes involved in reviewing applications, you will be notified by email on the date stated above. This allows us to properly assess all applications. Please note due to the number of applications received, we are unfortunately unable to provide application feedback.
To apply, you will be required to fill out the application form. As part of your application, a reference from one of your current discipline teachers is to be submitted. You will be required to contact one of your teachers to organise this.
A discipline teacher refers to the teacher of the subject that most aligns with the work experience stream you are interested in. For example, this may be a general science, geography, humanities, environmental science, mathematics, physics, biology or chemistry teacher.
Teachers are required to complete the teacher reference form. It is up to you to upload this as part of your application. Applications that do not have a reference from a teacher, will not be considered.
Due to the high demand of our program and the time dedicated in organising it, you must be available for the dates outlined above. We do not accept applications for placements outside of these dates.
No, participation in the program is free.
Biology, Chemistry, Earth Atmosphere and Environment, Mathematics and Physics. Students are required to select one stream.
The selection is based on the completeness and quality of the application, including the reference from a teacher.
No accommodation is available for students who participate in the program. Before you apply, please check to make sure you are able to travel to the Clayton campus every day for the duration of the program. There are a range of accommodation options within walking distance from the university that you may choose at your own expense.
