Tropical Cyclones in the Australian Region

How well do we understand the risks tropical cyclones pose to Australia, and how might those risks change in the future?

On 16 June 2026, Professor Elizabeth A. Ritchie of the ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather, and the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, explored the behaviour, hazards and impacts of tropical cyclones in the Australian region. In this seminar, Professor Ritchie drew on historical climatology and current research, highlighted what we know - and the significant gaps that remain - about tropical cyclone hazards and impacts, and discussed research aimed at understanding how tropical cyclones and their effects may change in the future.
