Monash scientists win national early career honours
The Monash University Faculty of Science proudly congratulates Dr Karolina Matuszek (School of Chemistry) and Dr Stephen Muirhead (School of Mathematics) on being named among Australia’s leading emerging scientists in the Australian Academy of Science’s prestigious 2026 honorific awards, announced today.
Recognising just 23 outstanding researchers nationwide, these awards highlight the depth and impact of Australia’s scientific talent across disciplines and career stages.
Dr Matuszek has been awarded the Le Fèvre Medal for outstanding basic research in chemistry within 10 years of PhD completion. Her work is redefining clean energy storage through the development of advanced materials that unlock the full potential of renewable power.
Her research has delivered major breakthroughs in thermal energy storage, including the discovery of a novel trimodal material that integrates multiple storage mechanisms to achieve exceptionally high energy capacity. This innovation is now progressing toward commercialisation, attracting strong investor interest.
She has also advanced the field of green ammonia synthesis, contributing to record-breaking electrolyte performance and paving the way for scalable, sustainable ammonia production.
