Theme: Our impact, our shared future

With the launch of Impact 2030, the Monash University Strategic Plan, it is an exciting time for the Faculty of Science to celebrate and communicate the impact of our research.

The purpose of the conference is to showcase the graduate research community’s impacts on:

• Monash’s three global challenges (climate change; thriving communities; and geopolitical security)
• the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and
• the significance of our fundamental research.

The Faculty of Science 2022 Graduate Research Conference provides an opportunity for you to develop and refine your presentation skills, network with your peers and understand how to effectively communicate your research impact.

What is Research Impact?
Research impact addresses the purpose of research.

Within the Faculty of Science, we believe that all of our research is impactful:

• We build fundamental research knowledge in fields of study within academia (academic impact), and/or
• We make contributions to society, the environment, the economy, or culture, beyond academic research (non-academic impact).

Your challenge
Participants of the conference are encouraged to communicate the impact of your research in the context of its purpose to a general science audience. We have chosen three sub-themes to allow every student to showcase their research and articulate their impact.

The conference sub-themes relate to the impact of

1. fundamental research
2. the Monash three global challenges (climate change; thriving communities; and geopolitical security) and/or the UN Sustainable Development Goals
3. understanding our universe

Along with presentations, attendees can expect:

Keynotes

The keynote speakers will have extensive experience across multiple areas including academia, industry and government. They will tell us about their career, their science, how they have made an impact and how you can make an impact.

Workshops

1. How to write for ‘The Conversation’
   
   Have you always wanted to try your hand at writing a non-scientific article about your research?
   
   A panel of Faculty of Science academics who write for ‘The Conversation’ will join Silvia Dropulich (Manager, Marketing, Media and Communications for the Faculty of Science), to speak about:
   
   
   • The importance of communicating research and the impact it has
   • How to know if your research is worth communicating
   • How to pitch for the desired audience
   • Who to contact for help
2. Understanding Research Impact
   Are you confused about what ‘impact’ means, or find it hard to directly link your research to impact?
   
   Experts from ‘The Research Impact Academy’ will guide workshop attendees through:
   • Understanding the definitions and terminology around non-academic impacts
   • Learning about the different categories of impact and how to achieve them in the different fields of research
   • Knowing the pathway to create impact and the elements of successful impact
   • Understanding impact activities and how they relate to the impact types
   • Learning about impact indicators and the evidence required to support impact claims
