Preparing learners for uncertainty in health professions: A handbook for educators
The Sustainable Development Education team collaborated on a Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences led project to co-develop an open-access educator guide on preparing learners for uncertainty in health professions.
Preparing Learners for Uncertainty in Health Professions: A Handbook for Educators provides a fully open-access, evidence-based overview of uncertainty in healthcare and education, practical examples of teaching activities that support learners’ development of uncertainty management skills, and support for educators to develop uncertainty tolerance teaching practices.
As part of the handbook, the Sustainable Development Education team collaborated on a chapter titled ‘Planetary Health: Learning from First Nations' Knowledges and Voices’ (Gabrielle Brand, Gitanjali Bed, Steve Wise and Rosalie Kickett).
Teaching planetary health, and learning from first nations’ voices and perspectives in the health professions is not easy. Fraught with elusive, complex and ambiguous concepts, inter and transdisciplinary knowledge, fear of ‘getting it wrong’ and lack of tangible ‘solutions’, can result in educators feeling unconfident and unprepared.
The chapter 'Planetary Health: Learning from First Nations' Knowledges and Voices' provides practical examples for health professions educators to adapt their curriculum. Through voice recording, video, animation and reflective in-class activities, the resource guides educators to examine stories that have been told or learned about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in health professional education. The guide encourages educators to explore ways to encourage a different way of knowing to the colonialist framing of Indigenous health and culture, and seeks to create culturally safe spaces for decolonised learning in health professional education to ensure that learners see, hear, embody, and learn from Indigenous voices.
