Josh Bourne
Dr Josh Bourne is a FMNHS Research Fellow, and leads the Thrombo-Immune research group, investigating novel mechanisms and therapeutic targets to alleviate inflammation in the brain after an ischaemic stroke. His team works in the Stroke and Imaging Inflammation Programme, headed by Professor Connie Wong.
Dr Bourne completed his PhD in 2022 within the Platelet Group at the University of Birmingham (UK) working with Associate Professor Julie Rayes and Professor Steve Watson. Here, he characterised platelet receptor CLEC-2 in thrombosis and the inflammatory response, and successfully published multiple first-author papers. During this time, he found passion in intravital microscopy, and therefore relocated to Melbourne to train with world-leading intravitalist, Professor Wong.
Dr Bourne now investigates the complex interplay between thrombosis, associated coagulation factors, and brain immune cells. His research utilises preclinical in vivo models of inflammation, state-of-the-art microscopy and spectral flow cytometry to understand how, where and why inflammation in the brain is detrimental. Since beginning research in Australia, he has acquired >$350,000 in competitive funding, and won awards at a national and international level. Dr Bourne received an FMNHS Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2024.
