Megan Galbally
Prof Megan Galbally's area of research focus is understanding the relationship between maternal mental health and child mental health and developmental outcomes. She has led the development of two longitudinal research studies, Victorian Psychotropic Registry (VPR) and now the ongoing Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study (MPEWS) in collaboration with researchers from a broad range of disciplines and institutions. The current study, MPEWS is a longitudinal, pregnancy cohort study with participants in Melbourne, Perth and rural WA. Prof Galbally's research interests also include early women's mental health including the relationship between childhood trauma, domestic violence and mental health, parenting practices (breastfeeding, infant and maternal sleep, parent-child relationship) and mental health and models of antenatal care for women with Eating Disorders, Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. An area of focus of both the VPR study and MPEWS is the effect of exposure to antidpressant medication in pregnancy on offspring outcomes. This research has resulted in national and international invitations to speak, invited publications including as lead editor of ‘Psychopharmacology and Pregnancy: Treatment Efficacy, Risks and Guidelines’ published by Springer, 2014 and as an expert advisor on relevant guidelines.
