Ranjana Srivastava

Dr Ranjana Srivastava, OAM, FRACP, is an internationally recognized medical oncologist, Fulbright scholar, award-winning author, and communicator. Her special interest lies in geriatric oncology, championing the unique needs and preferences of elderly cancer patients, as well as mentoring junior medical professionals.

Graduating from Monash University with first-class honours, Dr Srivastava undertook her postgraduate training in Melbourne before winning the prestigious Fulbright award to study medical ethics and doctor-patient communication at the University of Chicago’s MacLean Centre. She has since carved a distinguished career as a public intellectual winning numerous awards for her contributions as a writer and advocate for the art of medicine, including the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to communication in medicine. She is also the winner of the Human Rights Literature Prize for her book, Dying for a Chat: The Communication Breakdown between Doctors and Patients. She was awarded a second Fulbright Award to obtain a Master of Public Administration at Harvard University.

Dr Srivastava has published seven books, is a frequent contributor to the New England Journal of Medicine and The Guardian, and her widely-cited work on doctor-patient communication has influenced policy and practice worldwide. She serves as a Professor of Practice at Monash University and a visiting faculty at Harvard University sharing her expertise in the art of medicine and communicating with the public.
