Shu Wen Wen
Stroke and Imaging Inflammation Group
Dr Shu Wen Wen is a Research Fellow and leads the Stroke Immunopathology research theme, which focuses on uncovering the mechanisms driving the interaction between the brain and the systemic immune response following ischaemic stroke. Her research aims to understand how these immune processes contribute to secondary stroke complications, with the goal of informing new therapeutic strategies. Her team works within the Stroke and Imaging Inflammation Programme, under the leadership of Professor Connie Wong.
Dr Wen completed her PhD at The University of Melbourne, followed by postdoctoral training at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, where she investigated the role of cancer-derived small extracellular vesicles in shaping the tumour metastatic niche. Since joining Professor Wong’s lab in 2016, Dr Wen has made significant contributions to the field of stroke immunology, obtaining >$6M in funding as a chief-investigator to demonstrate that post-stroke infections are exacerbated by gut-derived bacterial translocation, with ageing, and impaired neutrophil function. Her research findings have been published in leading journals such as Aging Cell, Journal of Immunology, Gut Microbes, Cancer Research, Frontiers in Immunology, and Journal of Extracellular Vesicles.
