Monash University awarded $5 million for new ARC Training Centre for Radiochemical Technologies and Precision Radiopharmaceuticals

Professor Andrea Robinson, School of Chemistry

Monash University has been awarded $5 million in funding for one of the eight new Australian Research Council (ARC) training centres designed to support innovative commercial opportunities for Australia.

The new ARC Training Centre for Radiochemical Technologies and Precision Radiopharmaceuticals with Professor Andrea Robinson from the School of Chemistry as Chief Investigator will train the next generation of radiochemists and will lead the discovery of new molecular techniques to harness radioactivity.

The ARC has announced more than $64.8 million in funding to eight new Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Training Centres and five new ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hubs to mentor and train Australia’s next generation of research professionals, and to support partnerships between universities and industry that will generate real-world outcomes that are vital to Australia’s economic growth.

More than half the national funding of almost $40 million has been allocated to the training centres with $5 million awarded to Monash. Industry partners with the new ARC include the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, GLYTHERIX LTD, CYCLOTEK (AUST) PTY LTD, TELIX PHARMACEUTICALS LIMITED, ADALTA LIMITED, Neurosolutions Ltd, IPHASE TECNOLOGIES PTY LTD.

The field of radiopharmaceutical science is expected to see significant technological advancements thanks to the development of novel chemistry that makes use of molecular incorporation of radioactive elements, stable chelation of metal radionuclides, bioconjugation methodologies, radioactivity capture using nanomaterials and cages, and the design of new peptidomimetic targeting molecules.

The new ARC will train the next generation of radiochemists with a high level of expertise and improved commercial capability to fulfil the demands of a global radiopharmaceutical market that is quickly expanding.

By ensuring an internal supply chain and the know-how necessary for cutting-edge radiochemical technologies, this initiative will result in major benefits for the organisation.

The new ARC Centre will allow researchers to collaborate with essential industry partners to address present and future difficulties faced by industrial sectors. Additionally, it will also facilitate outstanding Higher Degree by Research and Postdoctoral training.
