Year 3B

The Year 3B medicine program

The first year of clinical training is largely hospital-based and requires a full academic year's commitment. At most sites, students live in furnished Monash accommodation for the year with subsidised rental. (See the accommodation policy and each site for details.)

By Year 3B, the program is the same for Central Medical School, graduate entry and Extended Rural Cohort students. The clinical content is delivered in blocks of clinical rotations, with a mix of advanced and applied medical science, patient-oriented presentations, and discussions in small tutorial groups. The emphasis is on students gaining real clinical experience, participating in patient care and understanding how health care teams work.

The curriculum in Year 3B maximises teaching and learning opportunities at each site. Small group activities are a feature and students participate in a range of student-centred learning activities that include clinical bedside teaching, ward and operating theatre experience, problem-based learning (PBL) using paper and real patient cases, as well as theme-based teaching.

Each of the sites provides tutorial rooms, library services and well-equipped simulated learning environments with dedicated clinical skills tutors.
