Year 2

Year 2 Rural Health Education Program

Year 2 medical students participate in a rural health education program, including a one-week rural placement, as part of the Monash MD program.

The placement focuses on clinical practice and involvement in community-based learning activities. Placements occur during Semester 1 (April) and 2 (August) across six rural communities - Bairnsdale, Bendigo, Mildura, Sale, Traralgon and Warragul.

Program objectives

While participating in the Year 2 rural health program, students will be able to:

  • Observe elements of rural health care
  • Demonstrate appropriate foundation Year 2 clinical skills, and be introduced to selected Year 3B clinical skills
  • Describe and discuss how regional and rural contexts impact on the clinical practice, and subsequent clinical and non-clinical management of patients
  • Recognise the importance of context in clinical reasoning and focused history-taking
  • Recognise the ways in which rurality can impact on health and illness
  • Recognise the impact of regional, rural and remote settings on diverse populations
  • Develop a cultural awareness of the local Indigenous population and the factors that influence their health and wellbeing
  • Recognise how links and networks between regional and rural health providers can influence the provision of rural health services
  • Reflect on the nature of a clinician’s role in a regional/rural clinical practice

Accommodation

Your accommodation is arranged and fully funded by Monash Rural Health. Accommodation includes cabins, holiday apartments and motels depending on the location of your placement.

Professionalism

Year 2 students on rural placements are immersed in a workplace and community setting, where they are expected to conduct themselves as medical professionals. Their behaviour represents Monash University and should align with the personal qualities required of a medical practitioner. Students must adhere to the expectations and guidance of their tutor or supervisor, seeking approval before making any changes to these directives. This includes strict compliance with occupational health and safety standards.

Please read the Code of Conduct for Medical Students at Monash University.

Year 2 Rural Health Education Program

"I witnessed firsthand how healthcare providers in rural areas not only treat illnesses but also build strong relationships with their patients, considering their social and economic circumstances. This patient-centred approach was truly inspiring and made me realise the profound impact it has on health outcomes."
