Acute Care
Central Gippsland Health (CGH) Emergency Department (ED) is a busy department that treats more than 16,500 patients a year. CGH’s ED boasts a number of resuscitation beds, general cubicles, consultation rooms and a short stay unit. Students completing an ED rotation at CGH will be based in the ED and attached to the emergency care team, which includes interns, registrars, HMOs, SMOs and Fellows of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEMs). Students will gain experience in treating patients presenting to the ED with varied illnesses and injuries.Students will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of emergency medicine, including triage, resuscitation and general consultations across a range of patients. During this rotation students will develop their ability to assess and manage an emergency patient in a regional/rural environment. The department runs an active teaching program for undergraduates, junior doctors, registrars and consultants.

Aged Care
Laurina Lodge, Heyfield, is an integrated site with 30 low level and 22 high level aged care beds. The facility is co-located with Heyfield Medical Centre, which provides all of the medical services for this 60-bed facility. Students completing their aged care placement at Central Gippsland Health (CGH) - Laurina Lodge campus will be predominantly working in the unit using a parallel consultation model with GPs and Registrars. It is a unique opportunity to be “hands on”, with extended support. Students will have the opportunity to fulfil a role similar to that of an intern and will be given a wide scope to practice clinical and diagnostic skills with appropriate support. Students will have access to the prescribing database, and will be able to order pathology and imaging under the supervision of the consultants. Students have a great deal of contact with consultants and the team works very closely together, forming robust working relationships.Students completing the aged care rotation will have the opportunity to engage in education provided for CGH Sale campus staff, Laurina Lodge staff and Heyfield Medical Centre staff.

Medicine
Central Gippsland Health (CGH) incorporates a busy medical ward, which caters to a wide variety of patients within the region. Inpatients on the medical unit present with a range of conditions, including cardiac, respiratory, GIT and neurological. The CGH medical unit also has dedicated rehabilitation beds to cater to the community's needs. Students completing a medical rotation at CGH will be part of an extensive and dedicated multidisciplinary team, which includes allied health, nursing staff, interns, HMOs, GPs, registrars and consultants. The team covers the medical unit and CCU, providing care for all acute and sub-acute medical inpatients. Students will gain experience in all aspects of inpatient medical care and will enhance their understanding of patient presentations and individual care requirements, and an appreciation of how living in a regional setting may impact illness and care needs. Students will work closely with their supervisors to develop the skills to assess and manage a medical inpatient in a regional/rural environment. Students completing their Medicine rotation in Sale will engage in education provided by CGH, which may include journal clubs, weekly ground rounds and radiology meetings.

Scholarly Intensive Placement (SIP)
SIP projects offered at Monash Rural Health Sale are in collaboration with Central Gippsland Health (CGH) and Monash Rural Health research staff. Most projects offered at CGH are clinically based and focused on quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) audit-style work, linked to national standards and areas identified as a need within the health service. These projects are intended to enhance the students' understanding of health care QA/QI processes, an important part of future practice, and to improve patient outcomes at CGH. In addition to QA/QI projects students may have the opportunity to undertake research-based projects with Monash Rural Health staff in various areas or education-focused staff with a member of the broad team working across MRH and CGH.

Surgery
Central Gippsland Health (CGH) is the major provider of surgical services in the Wellington Shire. The skilled team of local surgeons are supported by a multidisciplinary team to provide access to general and specialist surgery procedures including colorectal, breast, laparoscopic, endoscopic, gynaecological, IVF, Ear Nose & Throat, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, urology, and Paediatrics.Students completing a surgical rotation will be part of the surgical team at CGH. The team cares for pre and post-operative surgical inpatients. Students will gain experience in all aspects of inpatient surgical care, with opportunities to enhance their understanding of client presentations and individual care requirements, and an appreciation of how living in a regional setting may impact illness and healthcare needs. Students completing a surgical rotation will have the opportunity to spend time in busy operating theatres and consulting rooms. Students will work closely with their supervisors to develop their ability to assess and manage a surgical inpatient in a regional/rural environment. Students completing their surgery rotation in Sale will engage in education provided by CGH, which may include journal clubs, weekly ground rounds and radiology meetings.

Anaesthetics
Central Gippsland Health (CGH) has three busy theatres, one post-anaesthetic recovery room and one day surgery recovery room. Anaesthetic services are provided by specialist anaesthetists, registrars and GP anaesthetists.Anaesthesia is a practical specialty and the majority of the student’s time will be spent in theatres. Students completing this rotation will be rostered with an anaesthetist and will gain experience in intubation, cannulation, and anaesthetic techniques and protocols. Students also spend time in recovery with the nursing staff, in the pre-anaesthetic clinics, and participate in in-patient pain rounds. Students completing their specialty anaesthetics rotation in Sale will engage in education provided by CGH, which may include journal clubs, weekly ground rounds and radiology meetings.

Diagnostic Imaging
Central Gippsland Health (CGH) has a busy medical imaging department that provides a range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, using the latest equipment to minimise the use of radiation exposure to the patient. This includes CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine as well as general x-ray. Students completing a radiology rotation at CGH will be based in the medical imaging department and will be attached to a team, mainly working with the registrar with additional supervision from the consultants, to gain a range of experience across all modalities. Students completing their specialty radiology/diagnostic imaging rotation in Sale will engage in education provided by CGH, which may include journal clubs, weekly ground rounds and radiology meetings.

Rural General Practice
Students have the opportunity to complete a specialty rotation in Rural General Practice at MRH Sale. Students completing this rotation will be attached to a GP clinic and involved in all aspects of rural general practice. Students will parallel consult and have their own patients booked for consultations and management under appropriate supervision. This opportunity will further hone skills learned in 4C and help to consolidate skills needed as a junior doctor. This is an excellent opportunity for students considering a career as a rural generalist. Students completing the rural general practice specialty rotation will participate in education provided by the GP clinic where they are located.
