Acute Care
West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG) has a busy Emergency Department (ED) that sees around 24,000 patients per year. The ED comprises 18 cubicles, including 2 resuscitation bays along with an 8-bed short stay unit. Students completing an ED rotation at WGHG will be supervised by a consultant, and they will be embedded in the emergency department team, which offers students the support of registered nurses, HMOs, interns and consultants. Students will be rostered to a variety of early and late shifts, which will provide the opportunity to experience various aspects of emergency care, including triage, resuscitation and general consultations across different time contexts. During this rotation, students will develop their ability to assess and manage patients presenting with emergencies in a regional/rural environment.Students completing their emergency medicine rotation at WGHG will access an extensive number of in-hospital education sessions, which are advertised weekly. Sessions may include intern training, journal club, FACEM/PGY2+ education, ED-specific education and grand rounds.

Aged Care
Cooinda is a 40-bed public residential aged care facility co-located at West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG). Cooinda aims to provide its residents with a warm and welcoming environment that they can call home. Students completing their aged care rotation at Cooinda will gain a fully immersive experience and develop their knowledge and skills in aged care assessments, pain management, polypharmacy, rehabilitation and client advocacy. Students will be supervised by a geriatrician and will be involved in ward rounds, assessments, pain management, multidisciplinary care and medication management. This placement offers medical students the unique opportunity to understand and gain exposure to care needs for the older population in a care facility and within the community. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with medical, nursing and allied health staff to experience not only the medical care needs of older people, but also extended care needs for the management of common geriatric conditions.Students completing their aged care rotation at WGHG will have the opportunity to access an extensive number of in-hospital education sessions, which are advertised weekly. Sessions may include intern training, journal club, FACEM/PGY2+ education and grand rounds.

Medicine
West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG) provides a range of general and specialised care to patients, including cardiology, neurology, endocrine, haemodialysis, rheumatology, urology and palliative care across in and outpatient settings. Students completing a medical rotation at WGHG will be part of an extensive and dedicated multidisciplinary team, which includes allied health, nursing staff, interns, HMOs, GPs, registrars and consultants. The team covers the medical unit and HDU (with 30 acute beds, including two high dependency beds), providing care for all acute and sub-acute medical inpatients. Students will gain experience in all aspects of inpatient medical care, with opportunities to enhance their understanding of patient presentations and individual care requirements and an appreciation of how living in a regional setting may impact illness and care needs. Students will work closely with their supervisors to develop the skills to assess and manage a medical inpatient in a regional/rural environment.Students completing their medicine rotation at WGHG will access an extensive number of in-hospital education sessions, which are advertised weekly. Scholarly Intensive Placement (SIP)
SIP projects on offer at Monash Rural Health Warragul are in collaboration with MRH research-active staff. Students have the opportunity to undertake research-based projects with MRH staff in various areas, or education-focused research with a member of the broad team working across Monash Rural Health.

Palliative Care
West Gippsland Healthcare Group (WGHG) provides palliative care services to clients living in Warragul and the surrounding areas, in both an inpatient and community setting. This service aims to assist people with life-limiting illnesses to achieve symptom control and strives to meet their spiritual, emotional and practical needs holistically. Where possible the team works with the patient, their family and community services to assist the patient to remain at home.Students completing a palliative care specialty at WGHG will be supervised by the palliative care team that includes medical staff, nurse practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals. Students completing a palliative care rotation will learn skills in the assessment and management of patients facing a terminal illness. Students will learn about symptom management, palliative medications, advance care planning, patient and caregiver satisfaction and patient quality of life. Students completing their specialty rotation at WGHG will have the opportunity to access an extensive number of in-hospital education sessions, which are advertised weekly. Sessions may include intern training, journal club, FACEM/PGY2+ education and grand rounds.
