Accommodation for rural placements

Monash Rural Health provides accommodation for medicine, nursing and allied health students on placement in regional north-west Victoria and Gippsland. This accommodation includes college-style dormitories and houses in local communities. All accommodation is furnished, with fully equipped kitchens and internet access. All accommodation is non-smoking.

Accommodation costs

A subsidised weekly Accommodation Rental Fee covers the cost of accommodation and utilities. This fee is reviewed annually and is the same across all our locations.

The subsidised accommodation rate:

  • is available to all domestic medicine, nursing and allied health students (from any Australian university) and international medical, nursing and allied health students from Monash University who are undertaking a clinical placement.
  • Your placement must be at least two weeks (10 placement days & attending placement four days or more per week) to a maximum of one year to make a booking.
  • requires a minimum stay of two weeks.

The unsubsidised accommodation rate:

  • is available to domestic health science students on placement while studying a diploma-level course.
  • is available to all domestic medicine, nursing and allied health students (from any Australian university) and international medical, nursing and allied health students from Monash University who are undertaking a clinical placement that is less than two weeks (10 placement days).
  • is available to non-Monash international students undertaking a clinical placement.
  • can be booked up to 6 weeks before the start of the clinical placement.
  • requires a minimum stay of 1 week.

The Accommodation Rental Fee applies from the date of occupancy until fully vacated (including all possessions), including semester breaks, SWOT Vac, and exams where they are held at Monash Rural Health sites.

When you apply for accommodation with Monash Rural Health, you are deemed to have reviewed and agreed to the terms and conditions of use set out in the Monash Rural Health student residential accomodation terms and conditions of residency. If you do not agree to those terms and conditions, you will not be entitled to use the accommodation.

Equity of access

This policy ensures equity of access to accommodation for students at rural clinical sites regardless of where they are placed in country Victoria, or whether the course requirements demand short-term moves. It sets out the obligations of both Monash Rural Health and students on placements in country Victoria.

What to bring

You'll need to bring all your own towels and bed linen, including:

  • a mattress protector
  • pillows and
  • doona or blankets.

More than a place to stay

While on placement in our regions, you can access all the facilities at our training sites, including Eduroam, libraries, student lounges, and a range of student support services. We would love to welcome you, so please say hello if you come to our sites.

Monash Rural Health has been embedded in regional and rural communities for over 30 years. We are funded by the Commonwealth government, to build the future rural workforce. We aim to ensure that you have an enjoyable experience while on your rural placement so that you will want to return and work in the region.

Support in our accommodation

While we aspire for things to run smoothly while you're staying with us, sometimes things don't always go to plan. If something breaks or stops working, or if you've locked yourself out please contact us on the Student Accommodation Support Line (03) 9905 6055.
During office hours (9am-4.30pm), you will be prompted to select the Monash Rural Health office closest to where you're staying. For emergencies outside these hours, you will automatically be directed to Monash University's Building and Property Division.
