Monash Mildura General Practice Academy

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a doctor and serving your local community, now is your chance. Monash University is extending world-class medical training in Mildura through the Monash Mildura Primary Care Training Pathway: Regional Entry Scheme —a program designed for passionate health graduates who want to study local, stay local and make an impact where it matters most.

Monash University’s medical course is a leading source of the nation’s GPs. We are proud to expand our reach and provide more opportunities for people living in rural areas to study medicine close to home.

What you’ll study

Year 1: In the first year, students will engage in a blended learning experience combining face-to-face and online sessions. The curriculum includes professionalism, law and ethics, health sociology, evidence-based medicine, biomedical sciences, and clinical skills, complemented by local clinical and community-based placements.

Every effort will be made to ensure curriculum commitments adhere to regular and predictable hours, enabling students to maintain paid employment and/or fulfill childcare responsibilities.

Year 2: Clinical placements will occur at Mildura Base Public Hospital, Mildura Health Private Hospital, GP clinics, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), and community health services, while the academic program continues concurrently.

Year 3: This is a specialty year encompassing placements in obstetrics and gynaecology, children's health, psychiatry, and general practice. The academic program continues alongside placements.

Year 4: Six 6-week placements in each of emergency medicine, general medicine, surgery and Aged Care, General Practice, Scholarly Intensive Project and an elective/specialty.

Hear from our students

Ahmed Saeed

“From the very beginning of my time in Mildura, the sense of community among the staff and students has been a clear highlight. Going from the huge cohort size of my undergraduate degree to the small cohort of Mildura, I definitely feel like I am treated more as an individual rather than just a number. Another benefit of the small cohort size is the increased patient contact and access to the clinical environment. I have often been the only third-year student assigned to the team, which allowed the team to understand my ability and take an active interest in my development as a doctor."

"It’s been super exciting, very practical, which I love, and the faculty up here is the best. They’re so supportive and anything you need or are struggling with, they have an answer for you. I think that, in conjunction with the amazing time that I do have at the hospital has made Mildura almost like my home away from home."
