While most of us picture inflammation as a sore throat or a swollen ankle, researchers are showing that it is also a powerful and often hidden driver of childhood disease, from the first breath of a premature newborn to lifelong conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and juvenile arthritis.

The Department of Paediatrics has a keen interest in a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases that affect infants and children; specific areas of research strength include the microbiome, inflammatory bowel disease, necrotising enterocolitis and interventional studies in models of intestinal disease.
Interventional immunology is abuzz with activity at the Department of Paediatrics. Together with our partners, we use a wide variety of approaches to find and implement novel therapies; examples include cytokine and microbial engineering, proteomics, genomics and transcriptomics.
