Marcel Nold
Marcel F. Nold is a clinician-scientist with appointments as Professor of Paediatric Immunology at Monash University’s Department of Paediatrics, as Group Head at the Ritchie Centre, Hudson Institute of Medical Research, and as Consultant Neonatal Paediatrician at Monash Newborn, Monash Children’s Hospital.
Professor Nold's lab is firmly rooted in biomedical discovery science; however, achieving true translation and thereby making a real difference to patients’ lives has been the paramount goal of his work for the past 2 decades. Hence, Professor Nold and his team harness their expertise in immunology, anti-inflammatory cytokines and drug discovery to unveil molecular mechanisms that underpin early life diseases, thus identifying novel therapeutic avenues, which they can then pursue. The lab's discoveries, usually achieved in collaboration with Australian and international multidisciplinary partners, have been published in opinion-leading journals and are highly cited; for an overview click here. Recent translational achievements include the clinical trials Anakinra Pilot and Anakinra Pilot 2, which represent a first-in-population program introducing an anti-inflammatory medicine to neonatology.
Besides attracting substantial funding from the NHMRC and philanthropy, the Professor Nold's and his team's innovative work has produced several patent families and has attracted the keen interest of pharmaceutical companies such as F. Hoffmann-La Roche, CSL Ltd and Argenx, with whom they have engaged in multi-million dollar R&D-collaborations. Moreover, he has collaborated with the Medical Research Commercialisation Fund to found the spinout company Wolf Biotherapeutics, for which Professor Nold acted as Chief Scientific Officer.
Professor Nold highly values the contribution of students to his work, and his senior staff are strongly dedicated to providing outstanding training, supervision and mentoring.
