Prof Marcel Nold is a clinician-scientist with appointments as Professor for Paediatric Immunology at Monash University’s Department of Paediatrics and The Ritchie Centre, Hudson Institute of Medical Research, and as Consultant Neonatal Paediatrician at Monash Newborn, Monash Children’s Hospital.
Prof Nold's lab is firmly rooted in biomedical discovery science; however, achieving true translation and thereby making a real difference to patients’ lives has been the lab's paramount goal for the past 10 years. Hence, Prof Nold and his team harness their expertise in immunology, anti-inflammatory cytokines and drug discovery to unveil the molecular mechanisms that underpin early life diseases, thus identifying and pursuing novel therapeutic avenues. The lab's discoveries, often achieved in collaboration with Australian and international partners, have been published in opinion-leading journals and are highly cited; for an overview click here.
Besides attracting substantial funding from the NHMRC and philanthropy, the lab's innovative work has produced several portfolios of patents and thus the keen interest of pharmaceutical companies such as F. Hoffmann-La Roche and CSL Ltd, with whom they have engaged in multi-million dollar R&D-collaborations. Moreover, the lab has collaborated with the Medical Research Commercialisation Fund to found a spinout company, for which Prof Nold acts as Chief Scientific Officer.
Prof Nold holds high value in the contribution of students to his work, and his senior staff are strongly dedicated to providing outstanding training, supervision and mentoring. The lab offers a wide variety of projects – for some examples click here – and students with a passion for science are always welcome.
