Edward Giles

Dr Edward Giles is a consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist and a lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Monash Children’s Hospital. He is also a Research Fellow in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University, as well as the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Disease at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research. The Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology is interested in all areas of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition for research purpose, but the projects are largely divided into two main areas: laboratory-based and clinical research.

The main laboratory based project is in the field of microbiome in paediatric IBD. Dr Giles's team works with Dr Sam Forster (Nature 2016, Nature 2019) at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, and has attracted multiple grants for developing potential bacterial therapeutics in this area. They also collaborate with several other world-leading groups both at the Hudson and on the main university campus in the areas such as organoid development (so-called “mini-guts”), coeliac disease, and the role of novel type I interferon in intestinal inflammation.

In clinic research, Dr Giles's team has established a unique transition service for IBD patients, and are active in service delivery research to determine best outcomes for young adults with this and other chronic conditions. The adult IBD unit is one of the largest units for clinical trials in Australia, and is now beginning to recruit some adolescent patients into clinical trials.

Dr Giles is always recruiting enthusiastic students and other positions to ongoing projects. For an overview of his projects, see here.
