Remembering a theatre great
It is with great sadness that the Monash community has learned of the recent passing of internationally renowned theatre director, Peter Oyston.
Peter was a founding member of the Academy of Performing Arts. He held the position of Artistic Director (Theatre) for four years, in which he directed many outstanding productions and established and led the Graduate Ensemble.
An internationally renowned theatre and film director, teacher and artist, Peter came to Monash after many distinguished years as founding Dean of Drama at the Victorian College of the Arts.
Dr Peter Treager, Executive Director, Monash Academy of Performing Arts said staff and students alike would sorely mourn the passing of one of Australia’s theatrical giants.
“Peter led the development of the Academy’s theatre program with great passion and commitment, something which I experienced first-hand when I arrived at Monash in late 2009,” Dr Tregear said.
Prior to his role at Monash, Peter had been the Artistic Director of Playbox and championed theatre companies such as The Murray River Performing Group, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus, West Theatre and Theatreworks.
In the UK, Peter was founding Director of the Dukes Playhouse in Lancaster and ran the Century Mobile Theatre for three years. He was Associate Director of the Mermaid Theatre, the Liverpool Playhouse, and held numerous directing roles at the Royal Court and other theatres.
During his time, Peter directed over 200 productions in Japan, France, the USA, the UK and Australia.
