Optimising for Climate Change
How can mathematics help us make better decisions as we adapt to a changing climate?
On 14 July 2026, Professor Andreas Ernst from the School of Mathematics explored how mathematical optimisation can help tackle complex challenges posed by climate change. Using examples spanning competing land uses, invasive species management and the transition to renewable electricity, his seminar showed how optimisation can support better decision-making while highlighting the critical role of data, assumptions and interdisciplinary collaboration.
